Kim Beyer
O'Fallon, IL

Traveling for 26 years with her Air Force husband, Kim learned to adapt and find the beauty where ever they were stationed.  Now retired to O'Fallon, IL, she stays busy with her extended family, church, and volunteer work.  Of her art, Kim says, "My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was only 9.  By using wire, I can design and crochet unique pieces of jewelry.  I especially love to incorporate wood, stone, gems, and pearls to show the natural beauty that God has put into this world."

Neil crafts baskets, all split by hand, using unique long-ribbed construction.  He carefully selects young white oak trees to use in the baskets.  It takes more than 20 hours to complete a basket.

Each of my turnings is a unique functional piece of art.  I find the wood for my pieces by scavenging trees damaged during storms or removed by their owners for various purposes.  I recycle these trees to display their beauty in a new way. Each piece of wood has inner secrets hidden deep inside, which I uncover at my lathe.  Some pieces of wood are meant to be simple bowls, while others become elegant pieces of art.  My pieces highlight the wood’s natural beauty and are as much a joy to hold as they are to see.

In 1978 my wife, Debbie, asked me to make her a wooden spoon that wouldn't break. With only a homemade band saw and an antique wood lathe, I met her challenge and produced our first wooden spoon. In 1984 , I realized my dream of a full-time woodworking business with The Carpenter Shop—designing and constructing custom furniture, doing millwork, and making wooden spoons. Being encouraged by the enthusiastic response of those who purchased our woodenware, in 1991 The Carpenter Shop was retooled solely for the designing and making of Whetstone Woodenware.™ We make Whetstone Woodenware™ from kiln dried hard maple. And after 17 hand operations and a final polishing, the products are treated with mineral oil. The hard maple tree is grown and milled in the USA; our main lumber source is only 10 miles away from our shop.

Bill is an artist whose medium is wood.  He collects logs and stumps like some people collect stamps.  Where most of us look at a log and see firewood, Bill sees the potential for a one-of-a-kind piece of Mission-style furniture or a unique desk accessory.  He loves worm holes, short trunks, or limbs that create interesting wave patterns and crotch wood from the fork of a tree that has waves and peaks.  A true master craftsman, Bill saws his own logs, dries the wood, and stacks it in the woodshop.   He is a true master craftsman.

I have been a woodworker for about 15 years now. As the name Palm Tree Woodworks implies I tend to be a bit of a Parrothead. I started out making small "flat" projects and have gradually moved more and more towards woodturning. Many of my items are unique designs that came out of my tropics loving head and you won't find them anywhere else.

I have been working with wood since a teenager. I work with reclaimed wood from storm damaged trees or salvaged wood from construction activities. I use a mix of both power and hand tools but mostly traditional hand tools like handplanes, chisels and the like. Finishes are also simple and traditional.
